Where do I pay the ILIVS reinstatement fee?
Open the official ILIVS vehicle-owner notice page. Enter the reference number, plate number and five-digit ZIP code shown on your notice, then follow the instructions for your case. Confirm the owner or authorized-representative statement only if it applies to you.
The state registration reinstatement fee described for an insurance suspension is $100. It is paid to the state through the official process. Your auto insurance premium is paid separately to the insurance company or its authorized payment provider.
An ILIVS reinstatement fee is different from your monthly or installment insurance payment. Paying your insurer does not pay the state fee, and paying the state does not purchase auto insurance.
Before making a payment
- Read the verification date. If you were insured on that date, ask the responsible company or agent to review that coverage.
- Confirm whether your plates are actually suspended and whether a fee is required. A notice alone does not establish that you owe a reinstatement payment.
- Make sure the required current insurance information has been reported for the correct case.
- Check for a four-month repeat-violation period or other case requirement.
- Have the reference number, plate and ZIP code from the notice ready.
If you lost the notice, request reference-number assistance before trying to access the payment screen.
Why is the “Make Payment” button missing?
The official ILIVS FAQ says the payment button appears once current compliance information has been provided. If you cannot see it, check the reporting step and case instructions first. Confirm with the responsible insurer or agent that the information was submitted for the correct reference number.
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The notice will not open | Compare the reference number, plate and ZIP with the notice. |
| The notice opens but payment is unavailable | Confirm the required current insurance reporting and any case restrictions. |
| You bought a policy today | Ask whether the policy information has actually been submitted to ILIVS. |
| A four-month suspension is listed | Confirm the state’s eligibility date and outstanding requirements. |
A missing button is not a reason to buy another policy automatically. If you need help identifying the next step, send an assistance request.
Pay and keep a record of the result
- Access your case through the official portal.
- Review the vehicle and fee shown before continuing.
- Follow the payment instructions on the state’s page. Enter payment details only in that official process.
- Save the confirmation or receipt.
- Check whether the registration suspension is cleared and whether any other requirement remains.
If a payment page errors or stops before confirmation, check the result before retrying. Repeated attempts can leave you unsure which transactions went through. Keep any confirmation details available when requesting help.
I paid $100. Can I drive now?
A receipt shows that a payment was made; it does not, on its own, establish that every reinstatement condition has been satisfied. The required insurance evidence and any suspension period still apply. Confirm that the registration suspension is cleared before anyone drives the vehicle.
ILIVS says it does not send a separate clearance notice. Check the case result instead of waiting for another letter. If the record still appears unresolved, review the reported policy, reference number, payment result and any eligibility date.
Does the fee change for a second offense?
Section 7-606 specifies a $100 fee for first and qualifying repeat insurance-related registration suspensions. The repeat rule adds a four-month suspension period. Separate court matters or other violations can involve other costs, so the reason for the suspension matters.
Read our four-month suspension guide if your notice lists a repeat violation. Paying early does not shorten that period.
What if I need someone to walk me through it?
Choose “I need to pay online” on the assistance form. Include your reference number, plate or VIN if available. Our office will contact you by text and phone, verify the appropriate vehicle information and help you understand the payment steps.
If you don’t have the numbers yet, you can provide them later when we contact you.
A declined card, duplicate charge or refund question
If a payment is declined, read the error before another attempt. Check the details you entered and contact the payment provider or card issuer through their normal support channels. Our office can explain the ILIVS steps, but state payment questions belong with the official payment service.
For a possible duplicate charge, keep the receipts, transaction dates and case number. Ask official payment support to investigate. A refund or fee adjustment requires their review and is not automatic.
If your insurer can prove coverage on the original verification date, ask for that record to be reviewed before assuming a reinstatement fee is due. A traffic ticket or court-supervision payment is separate from the ILIVS registration process. Follow each notice’s instructions.
Read your notice and the official state sources for the instructions that apply to your case.
