How to request an ILIVS reference number lookup
Start with your name, phone number and email. Choose reference number, Illinois license plate number, VIN, or none on the form. If you choose none, you can send the plate or VIN by text when our office follows up.
- Complete the ILIVS assistance form and choose “Find my reference number.”
- Provide the Illinois license plate number or vehicle identification number for the vehicle on the notice. Either one can help our office locate the record.
- Our office will contact you by text and phone and verify registered ownership.
- Once your record is identified and ownership verified, we can help explain the reference number and the next step for your notice.
You can request help whether you already have auto insurance, need a policy, or aren’t sure of your coverage status. A lost letter doesn’t mean you have to buy another policy to understand your case.
What is the ILIVS reference number?
The reference number identifies the ILIVS notice or case involving your vehicle. It helps the insurance company, agent and state connect a response to the correct insurance verification request. You may see people call it an ILIVS notice number, case number or insurance verification number.
It is different from your insurance policy number, driver’s license number and VIN. Each identifies something different. If your agent asks for the ILIVS reference number, sending only an insurance card may leave them without the case information they need.
| Number | What it identifies |
|---|---|
| ILIVS reference number | The verification notice or case. |
| Insurance policy number | The policy issued by your insurance company. |
| Illinois plate number | The vehicle registration. |
| VIN | The vehicle itself. Modern VINs generally contain 17 characters. |
Where is the reference number on the notice?
Look near the top of the Illinois insurance verification notice. Use the number exactly as it appears. Keep the plate number, ZIP code, verification date and response deadline nearby, because those details answer different questions about the same case.
If you have several letters, compare the vehicle and dates before using an older reference number. A notice for a different car or an earlier case may not match the record you are trying to open. Read our guide to an ILIVS insurance verification notice if you’re unsure which date matters.
Can I use ILIVS.com without a reference number?
The official vehicle-owner notice page asks for three pieces of information: your reference number, plate number and five-digit ZIP code as shown on the notice. It also asks you to confirm ownership or authorization. The public login is not a VIN-only search that retrieves a missing reference number.
If you don’t know the number, request lookup assistance first. Avoid repeatedly guessing a reference number or changing other details to force a match. Once you have the right case information, use the official ILIVS notice page.
Should I send my plate number or VIN?
Either your plate number or VIN can be used to begin a lookup with our office. A plate number is often easiest to find on the vehicle or registration. The VIN is typically shown on the registration, insurance documents and vehicle, including the dashboard area visible through the windshield.
Check the characters carefully. If a vehicle has recently changed plates, let our team know. If the VIN on your policy differs from the VIN on the car, explain that during follow-up. A VIN mismatch may need review by the insurer or registration office.
Submit your contact details now and choose the option to provide your numbers later. You can send the plate or VIN by text when our office contacts you.
What happens after the reference number is found?
The reference number helps you move to the right next step. It does not, by itself, prove insurance coverage or remove a suspension. The next action depends on what the notice asks and whether the vehicle was insured on the verification date.
- If you had coverage on the verification date, contact the company or agent responsible for that policy.
- If you need current insurance, request an Illinois auto insurance quote.
- If your plates are suspended, follow the reinstatement steps.
- If you’re ready to pay, review the online payment instructions.
Reference lookup questions
Can you look up my record with only my name? Our office needs the plate number or VIN to perform a reference-number lookup. You can still submit the initial request with your contact details and provide the number later.
Do I need to upload a notice or insurance card? No document upload is required on the assistance form. Keep any documents available for your conversation with our office.
Is an ILIVS VIN lookup a vehicle history report? No. An ILIVS lookup concerns the insurance verification record. A VIN decoder, title search or vehicle history report does not establish whether an ILIVS suspension has cleared.
Will I receive the number instantly? Our office follows up with you and verifies ownership before discussing the record. The online request starts that conversation.
Missing letters, changed plates and more than one vehicle
If you never received the letter, tell us that when you request a lookup. Have the plate or VIN for the affected vehicle ready, even if you also own other cars. We verify registered ownership before discussing the record.
Use the reference number that matches the vehicle and verification date. A renewal PIN, policy number or reference from another vehicle is not a substitute. If you changed plates, keep both the earlier and current plate information available for follow-up.
Read your notice and the official state sources for the instructions that apply to your case.
