Compare four records
| Record | What you are checking |
|---|---|
| Vehicle VIN | The identification number on the actual vehicle. |
| Illinois registration | The VIN and plate associated with the state registration. |
| Insurance policy | The insured vehicle’s VIN and coverage dates. |
| ILIVS notice | The vehicle and verification date connected to the case. |
Modern VINs generally have 17 characters. Read them carefully rather than relying on a remembered number or a saved entry from another vehicle. A private photo of the dashboard or door-label VIN may help you compare records during follow-up.
If the insurance policy has the wrong VIN
Contact the company or agent that issued the policy. Ask them to review the vehicle, the original application and the coverage record. They determine what correction is appropriate and how the policy applies to the verification date.
Do not assume that changing a digit today automatically proves that the correct vehicle was insured earlier. Ask the insurer to address both the record correction and the ILIVS reporting needed for the actual date.
If the registration or notice has the wrong information
When the vehicle and policy match but the registration or notice does not, follow the Secretary of State’s instructions for reviewing the registration information. Keep the vehicle details, reference number and relevant dates ready.
Tell your insurer about the discrepancy as well. You want the insurance record and registration record to describe the same vehicle, but each organization must review its own information.
If you replaced a vehicle or changed plates
Confirm when the old vehicle was removed and the new one was added to the insurance policy. A current insurance card for the replacement vehicle does not automatically answer a notice concerning the previous car or an earlier date.
If plates were transferred, give the insurer or agency the vehicle and plate history relevant to the notice. Avoid mixing the current VIN with an old notice without explaining the change.
A useful message for your insurer
“My ILIVS notice shows [vehicle or VIN]. The VIN on my vehicle is [VIN], and the policy shows [VIN]. Please review the mismatch, confirm the coverage on [verification date], and advise what correction and electronic response are needed for reference [number].
Replace the bracketed items with accurate details. If the reference number is missing, our lookup assistance can help you identify the case.
Confirm the reporting after a correction
Ask whether the corrected or applicable policy information has been submitted for the ILIVS case. Then check the case result through the official notice login. Keep the revised documents and the insurer’s response for your records.
A corrected document and a cleared registration are different outcomes. If the plates remain suspended, follow the state’s case instructions and confirm clearance before driving.
The policy is active, but the vehicle details do not match
Ask the insurer to compare the application and any vehicle-change request with the policy’s vehicle list. An active policy number does not establish that every car in the household was covered on the verification date.
For a replacement car, keep the purchase date, the date you requested the change, and the insurer’s confirmation. If the notice names a vehicle you do not recognize, ask the state to review the registration record before treating the problem as a simple typo.
Read your notice and the official state sources for the instructions that apply to your case.
