“I had insurance. Why did I get an ILIVS notice?”

The first step is to check whether your vehicle was covered on the exact verification date printed on the notice. If it was, the insurer or agent responsible for that policy should review the record and report the applicable insurance information.

Check the verification date and the policy that covered it

An insurance card showing an active policy today may not answer a question about coverage several weeks or months earlier. Find the verification date on the ILIVS notice, then look for the policy that included the vehicle on that date.

Check the start and end dates, the vehicle listed and any cancellation, reinstatement or replacement-policy documents. If coverage changed near the verification date, ask the insurer to review the actual effective dates and times. Avoid assuming that a payment or reinstatement erased a gap.

Why an insured vehicle may not match

Possible issueWhat to ask the insurer to check
Wrong VIN on the policyWhether every VIN character matches the vehicle and registration.
Recently replaced or added vehicleWhen the vehicle was added and which VIN was insured.
Changed insurance companiesWhich insurer covered the vehicle on the verification date.
Cancellation or reinstatementWhether a gap existed and what the effective dates show.
Insurance information not matched to the caseWhether the correct coverage details were submitted for the ILIVS reference number.

Your insurer can check these details against the policy records and explain why the vehicle did not match.

What to say to your insurance agent

“I received an ILIVS notice for my vehicle. The verification date is [date], and the reference number is [number]. Please confirm whether this vehicle was covered on that date, compare the VIN with my policy, and let me know what electronic reporting is needed for this case.”

If you don’t know the reference number, request a lookup using your plate or VIN. Keep your policy number available for the insurer, even though it is not the same as your ILIVS reference number.

What if I changed insurance companies?

Ask the company that insured the vehicle on the date Illinois is checking to review the historical coverage. A later policy may prove that you have insurance now, while the earlier policy is what answers the notice.

For example, if Illinois is checking March 12 and you changed companies April 1, ask the company that insured the vehicle on March 12 to respond. Keep the April policy available to show your current coverage.

Our office can help you understand the request and locate the case information. Insurance reporting for a policy purchased elsewhere belongs with the agent or company that provided that coverage.

What if the VIN is wrong?

Compare the VIN on the vehicle, registration, policy and notice. Identify exactly where the mismatch appears. If the policy is wrong, ask the insurer to review and correct its records as appropriate. If the registration is wrong, follow the Secretary of State’s correction instructions.

A corrected insurance card does not necessarily mean the ILIVS response is complete. Ask whether the applicable coverage information has also been submitted for the case. Our VIN mismatch checklist walks through the comparison.

What if my plates are already suspended?

Tell the insurer that the suspension is active and provide the notice’s date and reference number. If the vehicle was insured on the verification date, the appropriate response is to establish the actual coverage record, not to assume a new policy and fee will resolve every issue.

Check the state’s case status after the response. While the registration remains suspended, the vehicle cannot be driven. If the state determines that a suspension and reinstatement requirements still apply, follow the suspended-plate process.

Common mistakes that slow down the response

  • Sending only a current insurance card when the notice asks about an earlier date.
  • Giving the insurer a policy number but not the ILIVS reference number.
  • Asking a new insurance company to verify coverage issued by a previous company.
  • Correcting a VIN without confirming whether the case needs an electronic response.
  • Assuming a conversation with the agent means the state record has already cleared.

Keep the response focused: the correct vehicle, the correct date and the correct case.

Family policies, missing vehicles and cancellation questions

A policy in a spouse’s or family member’s name still needs a vehicle-specific review. Ask the insurer to confirm the VIN and coverage dates for the car listed on the notice. Being in the same household does not answer that question by itself.

If a vehicle was never added correctly, or a payment was followed by cancellation, gather the application, vehicle-change request, payment receipt and cancellation or reinstatement documents. The insurer must determine what coverage actually existed. Do not assume a later correction or payment filled an earlier gap.

When the agent says the response was submitted, ask which reference number, vehicle and verification date it addressed. Save that information and check the official case result. If the record stays open, those details give the insurer and state a useful starting point.
