How to reinstate suspended license plates in Illinois

For an insurance-related registration suspension, reinstatement generally requires current liability insurance, the required insurance reporting and a $100 state fee. A qualifying repeat violation also carries a four-month suspension period.

Before you pay, check why the plates were suspended

Read the notice’s verification date, effective suspension date and reference number. If your vehicle was insured on the verification date, ask the insurer or agent responsible for that coverage to review and report it. A mismatch or missing report needs to be addressed accurately.

This guide covers Illinois insurance-related registration suspensions. A driver’s license suspension, unpaid toll issue, parking restriction or other registration problem may follow a different process. Check the reason on the notice.

The reinstatement process, step by step

  1. Confirm the case and dates. Determine whether the suspension is active and whether a repeat-violation period applies. If the letter is missing, request reference-number help.
  2. Confirm current liability coverage. If you already have it, have the insurer and policy information available. If you need it, request an auto insurance quote.
  3. Have the appropriate insurance information reported. Give your reference number to the agent or insurer responsible for the policy. A policy purchase alone does not prove the electronic response is complete.
  4. Pay the state fee when it is due and available. Use the official notice portal. The payment option appears after current compliance information has been provided.
  5. Check the result before driving. Save your receipt and confirm the registration suspension has cleared. Any required suspension period must also be satisfied.

First suspension versus a repeat violation

SituationReinstatement requirements
First insurance-related suspensionCurrent insurance evidence and the $100 reinstatement fee. No four-month repeat-violation period.
Qualifying repeat violationFour months from the effective suspension date, current insurance evidence and the $100 fee.
You were insured on the verification dateHave the responsible insurer or agent review the historical coverage and respond to the case. The state determines the resulting status.

Section 7-606 describes a second or subsequent violation within the preceding four years, and also addresses a violation of Section 3-708. Another letter does not automatically mean another established violation. Read the case instructions and use our four-month suspension guide for the timing questions.

Can Illinois plates be reinstated the same day?

Same-day completion may be possible for an eligible first suspension when all required steps are completed and the state record reflects clearance. Missing information, incomplete reporting, payment issues or other requirements can delay the result.

A four-month suspension cannot be shortened simply by purchasing insurance or paying early. The end of that period is one requirement; insurance evidence and the fee still matter. Confirm clearance instead of relying on a promised completion time.

How much does reinstatement cost?

The state registration reinstatement fee described in Section 7-606 is $100. A qualifying repeat violation adds the suspension period; the section still specifies a $100 reinstatement fee. Insurance premiums are separate.

A state fee is not an insurance down payment. Court fines, other fees or separate restrictions can arise from a different issue and are not necessarily covered by this amount. Use the fee and instructions for the actual case, and pay through the official state notice portal.

Can I drive after buying insurance or paying?

You need both valid insurance and an active registration before the vehicle returns to the road. An insurance card or payment receipt alone does not establish that the registration suspension is cleared. No one should drive the vehicle while its plates remain suspended.

Renewing the registration or transferring the plates is not a workaround. Section 7-606 says the suspension remains in force after renewal or a new registration for the vehicle and also applies to a vehicle to which the owner transfers that registration.

How do I check whether my plates are still suspended?

Use the official ILIVS notice page with the reference number, plate number and ZIP code from the notice. Review the case result after reporting and payment. If something is unclear, ask about the exact case rather than relying on a general plate search.

ILIVS says no separate clearance notice is sent. Keep your records and check the result. If you paid but the case is unresolved, review what to check after an ILIVS payment.

How to check if your Illinois license plates are suspended

Start with the official ILIVS.com notice portal and the notice for the affected vehicle. Check the effective suspension date and current case result. A warning about a future suspension and an active suspension are different stages.

A payment receipt, new policy or current registration sticker does not by itself establish that the insurance suspension is cleared. If the ILIVS result and another state registration record seem inconsistent, ask the Secretary of State to review them before driving.

Registration renewal, emissions requirements, court matters and driver’s license reinstatement can involve separate records. Resolving ILIVS does not settle every other hold. If you have more than one notice, identify which office issued each one.

You don’t have to figure out your notice alone.
